When it comes to cleaning tips, I love hearing about products that get the job done without a lot of effort on my part. Everyone has a cleaning job they hate the most. Personally, I hate cleaning showers! If you have good cleaning tips for that, I’ll take them.
Whatever it is you hate to clean, you have to find a product that is going to ease the pain.
There are some products I think everyone should have on hand. Sometimes a new product comes out and it is amazing. Then, there are always the products that have stood the test of time and I wouldn’t be without.
For jobs like window cleaning a homemade concoction often works the best. You will find one with vinegar and Dawn below.
I have to say, I have shelves full of products that I have purchased and found they either didn’t work or were just like everything else in that category just with a different label.
For the most part, I try to pay attention to chemicals in a product. I try to use products that don’t have a lot of fumes. I wish I had been aware of all the dangers of cleaning products 20 years ago. Most people today are aware of the effect cleaning products can have on our health and the environment.
Here are ten cleaning products I love

With over 30 years of cleaning experience, I think this vacuum cleaner is one my top purchases ever! Everything the manufacturer says is true and more. So easy to use and wow, what power! I skip along from hardwood to area rugs, tile, and carpet with ease. The best part there is no cord!!! I used to HATE vacuuming stairs. Not anymore. I purchased the V8 Animal and it was worth every penny!
Technology and cleaning come together to create this crazy do not have one of these yet, it is pricey. But I want one. I have a couple of friends who got a Roomba this past holiday season and they don’t stop talking about it! It vacuums your house while you are at work! It goes under furniture, and won’t fall down stairs. I guess it senses dirt and does an awesome job. It cleans for 120 minutes and then recharges itself. You connect to WiFi and can it works with Alexa. You control it from an app! Seriously? I know I am going to watch to see if these go on sale over the holidays. If you have one of these I would love to hear from you.
Bissell SpotClean Professional Portable Carpet Cleaner
Cleaning carpet a horrible job by yourself, so I don’t do it. Actually, a portable cleaner that I can bring from room to room and focus on stains is all I need during the year. I have a close friend who has two dogs and three young boys. Yep, she recommended the Bissell Spot Cleaner to me. She uses it all the time for spills and accidents. This time of year she especially has to deal with muddy paws and shoes. Cleaning her van after family trips is awesome.
We have hardwood floors throughout our kitchen and family room. I wanted a product that wasn’t going to scratch them and was safe on the finish. We had problems with a product a few years ago that resulted in having our floors refinished, so I did my homework. Bona hardwood floor cleaner. I like that it has the GREENGUARD GOLD certification confirming it is safe for our family.
Sometimes you just need to get down on your hands and knees and scrub. I found these gel knee pads I can use for scrubbing bathroom floors and for working in the garden. There is no need to get your knees or clothes dirty. I love that they stay in place and are comfortable when getting up and down.
Now onto products I pretty much use daily:
I love this stuff! I have used it over and over on stains I thought would never come out! Spot Shot works great on pet stains, coffee, spaghetti sauce, grease and oil, marker, wine and more! Spot Shot is safe to use around pets and kids because it’s non-toxic and biodegradable. Notice I have the word wine in bold print. I shouldn’t admit how many times I have used Spot Shot on red wine. Stains come right out even on light colored carpet.
Every once in awhile another brand pops up at our house and see and feel the difference immediately. I know you could argue that it is such a waste to use paper rather than a cloth for most cleaning, but I have become convinced that it is more sanitary using a fresh paper towel over a cloth that has been in contaminated by something germy. Viva towels are soft enough to use in place of napkins, so except for parties and holidays, Viva towels are our napkins too.
Clorox Disinfecting Wipes
Everyone should have these in every bathroom and the kitchen. I love the peace of mind knowing that I am wiping away germs, spills, and other nasty stuff, then just throw it away. Clorox wipes kill 99% of bacteria and viruses. This is why teachers use them to clean everything in their classrooms. Great for cleaning remotes, phones, door knobs and anything else laying around your house.
Complaining about cleaning the shower at work one day, I asked everyone if they had any cleaning tips for me. Two people said, “Mr. Clean Magic Eraser”, at the same time! They were right! If you never used these, you have to right away. Soap scum in the shower disappears with just one of these cleaning pads and water! Just walk around the house and when you see dirt on the wall, light fixtures, whatever, just wipe it away
Last but not least,
Here are 5 of my favorite uses, but there are close to 100 cleaning tips using Dawn Dish Soap online!
I have come to believe that Dawn Dish Soap is one of the miracle products on the market. There are new and different versions, but most will tell you to just buy the plain blue Dawn, nothing fancy.
- TUB AND SHOWER CLEANER
Fill a spray bottle half full of vinegar and heat it in the microwave. Fill the rest of the way with blue Dawn. Put the lid on and shake well. Spray on your tub and shower walls, allowing it to sit for a few minutes before rinsing away. This will even take care of the bathtub ring. Let it sit on your shower floor overnight and scrub the gunk away in the morning.
- UNCLOGGING TOILETS
Pour a cup of Dawn liquid dish detergent into the toilet bowl and let it sit for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, pour a bucket of hot water from waist height into the toilet bowl to clear it out.
- REPEL INSECTS
Put a drop of Dawn Dishwashing Liquid in a spray bottle with water. Mist household plants to repel aphids, spider mites, and mealy bugs. Spray counter-tops, cupboards and other areas to repel ants.
- LAUNDRY PRE-TREATER FOR OILY STAINS
For oil-based stains such as lipstick, grease, butter, motor oil, cooking oil, and some pen inks, apply some Dawn liquid directly to the stain and scrub with a small brush or toothbrush until the oil is removed. Launder as usual.
- CLEAN YOUR WINDOWSThis tip comes from Merry Maids: Mix 3 drops of Dawn in 1 gallon of water and fill a spray bottle with the solution. Spritz your windows and wipe just as you would with any window cleaner. When it comes to cleaning windows, I have learned that HOT water really makes a difference. I cut my time on windows way down once I realized how smooth a squeegee was!!
- TUB AND SHOWER CLEANER
Cleaning is a great time to start decluttering your house and living life as a minimalist.
This, not my complete list of course, so I will be sharing more cleaning tips in the future, please let me know if you have a product you cannot clean without! I will add it to my list.
